In 2016, I finished working as Head of History at a city FE college. For 11 years I had worked in HE and FE, been an examiner for OCR and worked as a union officer for UCU. It was time for a change! But what to do next? I set up a social enterprise combining my experience in education with my desire to do something environmentally positive. In 2018 One Planet Matters CiC was born.
I believe in many things: social equality, and opportunity being central to what a society should be able to offer its young people. I also know that the climate emergency is driving us towards disaster on a global scale and wanted to try and do something about it. One Planet Matters was created to deliver a series of environmental workshops which we financed through the sale
This we did in 2018 – 19, and we successfully removed the potential for over 2.75million single use coffees cups being used, whilst developing and successfully delivering our environmental workshops. We soon realised that a workshop, even a series of three was restrictive in that we could only deliver it to a small group of students at any one time. Even if a school/college wanted more students to access the workshops it was difficult to achieve.
We set about creating something that would make it easier for schools and colleges to access our workshops in a more flexible and cost-effective way. This led us to develop and create our e Learning package. Our mission is to engage with as many young students/pupils as possible; to inform, challenge, educate but more importantly to give them the knowledge to make informed decisions, as young adults, in a way that has the most positive outcome on the environment as possible. This is what One Planet Matters Education is now doing.
I believe that all young people leaving school/college should understand the challenges facing the environment today, but more importantly, I know that they CAN make a difference. I also believe it will enhance their educational experience and reflect the values of the institution they are studying at.
